As H1N1 flu spreads and seasonal flu season begins, SMDC Health System can help you stay healthy and informed. Check back here regularly for new information.

Symptoms for seasonal flu and H1N1 flu (also known as swine flu) are the same, so public health officials urge you to get both a seasonal flu vaccine and, when it becomes available to you, the H1N1 vaccine. Supplies of both vaccines have been limited but shipments are now arriving.

H1N1 flu

SMDC has received a limited supply of H1N1 vaccine from the Minnesota Department of Health for priority groups of people who are at high risk of developing medical complications from the pandemic virus:

  • Pregnant women
  • Persons who live with or provide care for infants less than 6 months old
  • Children ages 6 months to 4 years
  • Children ages 5-18 years with chronic medical conditions

On Nov. 19, the state health department expanded the priority groups to include healthy children ages 5-9 but only for the nasal spray vaccine. SMDC has distributed its nasal spray vaccine and cannot offer these children flu shots.

Priority groups were set by the federal government, which owns the vaccine and has set strict rules for its distribution.

SMDC is offering the H1N1 shot during a walk-in clinic. No appointment is necessary.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 18-20, Nov. 23-25 and Nov. 27 in the lobby of SMDC Medical Center's Duluth Clinic First Street Building, 420 E. First St., Duluth.

Our neighborhood clinics (Lakeside, West Duluth and Hermantown) and regional clinics also have vaccine. Call your clinic to schedule an appointment.

To receive a vaccine, you must:

  • Be free of flu symptoms.
  • Be in one of the priority groups: pregnant women; persons who live with or provide care for infants less than 6 months old; a child ages 6 months to 4 years; or a child ages 5-18 years with a chronic health condition.
  • Present a photo identification card with your current address, which also will serve as identification for your children.
  • Present your medical insurance card or government health insurance card. Vaccination administration fees are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies. If you don't have insurance, you will be billed.

To help you plan your vaccination visit, regular updates and wait times will be posted here.

The federal government says there will eventually be enough H1N1 vaccine for everyone who wants to receive it. Delays in production and distribution mean the vaccine is currently in short supply and therefore is being offered to priority groups first.

Seasonal flu

SMDC will offer a shot and a nasal spray vaccine for the seasonal flu during our walk-in clinic. No appointment is necessary.

Walk-in clinic hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 18-20, Nov. 23-25 and Nov. 27 in the lobby of SMDC Medical Center's Duluth Clinic First Street Building, 420 E. First St., Duluth.

Our neighborhood clinics (Lakeside, West Duluth and Hermantown) and regional clinics also have seasonal flu vaccine. Call your clinic to schedule an appointment.

The seasonal flu vaccine does not protect you from the H1N1 strain.
