If you’re going to wear high heels...

SMDC Podiatrist Kirsten Moore offers these guidelines for buying high-heels:

  • Buy shoes at the end of the day when your foot is slightly swollen from the day’s activities.
  • Look for rubber soles for shock absorption.
  • Select shoes with padding in the heel and ball of the foot.
  • Choose a style that’s snug but not tight.
  • Avoid backless styles.
  • Purchase a shoe with a thicker, wider heel for more stability – not a stiletto.
  • Heels should be no higher than 1- to 1-1/2 inches.
  • Always try on shoes before you buy.
  • The shoe should have a finger-width of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
  • A square toe box is best. Anything else pinches from side to side and can create neuromas.
