SMDC Weight Management Program earns second accreditation

The SMDC Weight Management Program has earned accreditation from the Bariatric Surgery Center Network (BSCN) of the American College of Surgeons.

It is the second prestigious accreditation that the Weight Management Program team has earned since last year when it was recognized as a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

“We’re honored that our growing program has earned accreditation from two professional organizations with high standards for surgical outcomes and comprehensive patient care,’’ said Tracy Pitt, DO, a bariatric surgeon. “Our team is focused on the patient, from the first office visit to post-operative care and ongoing support.”

The accreditation as a BSCN Level 1b facility means SMDC’s program has met criteria that ensure it is fully capable of supporting a bariatric surgery care program. It also recognizes a commitment to providing the highest quality of care to its patients, including the support and resources necessary both before and after surgery.

The BSCN accreditation comes after an on-site review by experienced bariatric surgeons and requires ongoing reviews of SMDC’s bariatric surgery outcomes by the American College of Surgeons.

The American College of Surgeons started the accreditation program in 2005 to help consumers identify facilities that provide optimal surgical care for patients who undergo bariatric surgery.

In 2008, the Weight Management Program and its surgeons were designated a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. To become a Center of Excellence, our program had to meet the highest standards in the industry. This designation also demonstrates the program’s comprehensive commitment to a high level of quality patient care, patient safety and advocacy.

The most important reason for patients to choose a Center of Excellence is that accredited centers consistently demonstrate improved outcomes and lower rates of major complications.
