MyHealth offers on-line access to kids' medical records

Like other mothers, Katy Dorin has a long list of things to do before her daughter, CeCe, heads to school. This fall, Dorin found a time-saving shortcut for filling out the required school health form.

Instead of digging through her own files or waiting on the telephone to request CeCe’s immunization records from her pediatrician, Dorin just logged on to SMDC MyHealth.

In a few keystrokes, she accessed CeCe’s electronic health record and printed out a complete and accurate list of her daughter’s immunizations.

Katy Dorin has discovered that

using SMDC MyHealth is a

convenient and easy way to access

her daughter's medical records and

to make appointments for CeCe.

“It’s so simple,” the Superior mother says.

SMDC MyHealth allows you to view

your own and your children’s medical records via the Internet. You can

review test results, current medications, immunizations, diagnosed medical issues and allergies.

If you need to ask your doctor a question, you can send an e-mail message and receive an electronic response within two days. You can

also request an appointment and

keep track of upcoming appointments.

Dorin recently signed up for MyHealth

so she’d have another tool to help her manage the sometimes complicated medical needs of her daughter, who

has Down syndrome.

“I like that I can e-mail Dr. Shar (Valentine) or the nurses and they get back to me,” Dorin says.

Dorin likes getting a quick turnaround

on test results. When a result is in,

she gets an e-mail message to check MyHealth.

“I like to look at the test results while

I’m having a conversation with the doctor,” she explains, adding that she can ask better questions by seeing the results beforehand.

Dorin keeps track of appointments and even schedules them through MyHealth.

“I just choose the doctor, morning or afternoon, and the day of the week and click,” she says. “Usually I get a phone call back in a half-hour to verify the appointment time.”

MyHealth information is secure and protected. The year-old service is free to SMDC Health System patients. Parents must have their own MyHealth accounts in order to access their children’s medical records.

Parents can see information for their children under age 12. Immunization records are available to parents for a child ages 12-17 but the child must sign a release to allow parents to view all of his or her information on MyHealth.

“People really seem to like it,” says Margie Randolph, Pediatric Department Manager for SMDC Medical Center-Duluth Clinic.

Physicians also like it, she says.

“Physicians would really like people to get involved with their medical care and MyHealth is a piece of it,” Randolph says.
